Demography
Vaasa region is one of Finlands most multilingual and international regions. During the 21st century the share of the international population has been increasing fast. We speak almost a hundred different languages, and the population includes 120 different nationalities (statistics from the city of Vaasa, which includes groups of under 10 people). In addition to statistics, internationality is also reflected in workplaces, schools, kindergartens, hobbies and, of course, in the street scene.

Descriptions
Population. The indicator shows the population living permanently in the area at the end of the year (the 31st of December).
Population forecast. The population forecast is based on scenarios prepared by MDI. More about the scenarios and the underlying assumptions: www.mdi.fi/vaestoennuste
The proportion of people of working age. The indicator shows the share of the population aged 15–64 in the region.
Age structure. The indicator describes the age structure of the population according to five-year age groups in the most recent statistical year, compared to the year 2000.
*Nationalities and languages of groups with more than 10 people have been included in the data. In 2018, the City of Vaasa recorded a total of 121 nationalities and 96 mother tongues (in these figures nationalities of groups with less than 10 people are also included).
Foreign-language speakers. The indicator shows the proportion of foreign-language speakers of the population. This number includes persons whose mother tongue is other than Finnish, Swedish or Sami.
The number of foreign nationalities. The indicator shows the total number of nationalities. NOTE! For privacy reasons, the nationality of groups of less than 10 persons cannot be presented. For this reason, the actual number of nationalities is larger than the recorded number. If a person has dual-nationality status, one of which is Finnish, he or she is counted as a Finnish citizen in the statistics.
