Regional collaboration key to scaling sustainable Nordic transport systems
A new Nordic report highlights the importance of regional collaboration in enabling scalable sustainable freight transport.
The report shows that scaling depends on how transport solutions are integrated across regions, connecting infrastructure, industries, and supply chains.
VASEK has contributed to the work by bringing a regional development perspective, emphasizing the role of local ecosystems in enabling cross-border transport solutions.
The concept of transport legs as reusable building blocks highlights how regional infrastructure can support multiple supply chains and logistics configurations. This reinforces the importance of regional coordination and innovation in the Nordic transition.
Project manager Lasse Pohjala is more than happy to share his expertise in developing green networks. According to him the report being published today serves as an excellent tool and roadmap for further development.
"The Mid Nordic East–West Resilience Network route, stretching from Trondheim to Vaasa, has been recognized as one of the key corridors in developing the green network. In particular, the ferry connection between Umeå and Vaasa plays a crucial role in this development. Since January, our ferry Aurora Botnia has been equipped with a 12 MWh battery capacity, and since August 2025 it has been fully capable of operating solely on liquid biogas. Today, we can truly describe Aurora Botnia as a genuinely clean ferry."
Pohjala states further:
"Based on our experience, there are three fundamental factors in developing a successful green network: volume, frequency, and reliability. Our network has already demonstrated strong performance in all three areas. Soon, we will also be highly competitive in terms of CTE cost, delivery time, and emissions performance. Of these, emissions performance is already a unique and significant strength for us."
