Risk management in focus at Startia’s breakfast event

On Friday 27 March, Startia organized a breakfast event at Startup Factory in Vaasa, focusing on risk management in business. The participants included both aspiring and established entrepreneurs who wanted to gain a clearer understanding of what to keep track of when running a business.

During the morning, two key themes were addressed: accounting and insurance.

Johan Hällmark from Bäck & Vilén highlighted the importance of accounting in everyday business operations. He emphasized that accounting is not only about meeting legal requirements, but also serves as an essential tool for monitoring business performance and supporting decision-making.

Through concrete examples, he demonstrated how structure, regular follow-up and clear key performance indicators can provide a better overview and support business development. He also stressed the importance of engaging the right expertise – a skilled accountant helps ensure accuracy while reducing the risk of costly mistakes.

Conny Luden from LähiTapiola discussed insurance from a business perspective. He went through different types of insurance, how they work and what they cover in practice. A key takeaway was that insurance needs vary depending on the business – solutions should be tailored to each entrepreneur’s situation.

He also emphasized the importance of making well-considered, overall assessments together with the client, rather than relying on standard solutions. Through practical examples, he illustrated how different situations can influence what kind of protection is needed.

Startia’s Business Advisor Tommi Virkama highlighted the importance of both accounting and insurance:

"When it comes to entrepreneurship, accounting is essential. It shows where the business is heading and helps you identify problems early. When your figures are up to date, you also have time to react before it’s too late. It is also important to review your insurance coverage in time – you cannot insure a house that is already on fire."

He also noted that it is often most effective to let a professional handle accounting, allowing entrepreneurs to focus on their core business.

During the event, discussions arose around the themes presented, and the concrete examples were perceived as particularly valuable.
